Athlete's Guide
Please print off all the information below. This is the information you will need to prepare
for your race. As well, please print off a copy of the appropiate race maps so you can
familiarize yourself with the course before race day.


RULES
1. You are required to wear a top or singlet during the bike and run portion of the race.

2. You must wear your race number on your back during the Bike and on your front during
the run.

3. You must store your bicycle and other gear at your designated bike rack.

4. You must wear the official swim cap issued at registration.

5. USAT rules will apply.

6. Each athlete is responsible for knowing the course. Every effort will be made to place a
sufficient number of monitors on the course and to mark all intersections and confusing
areas clearly. Please heed the instructions of all course monitors and police.

7. The water temperature will be 80 degrees F. Wetsuits and others floating devices are
allowed for safety reasons. However, athletes who choose to wear wetsuits and others
floating devices will not be eligible to win awards.

8. Absolutely no drafting another bicycle or any other vehicle will be allowed. If you are
within the 4 bike lengths drafting zone, you will be allowed 20 seconds to make a pass.
No warnings are required to be issued before a penalty call is made, although the draft
marshals will be encouraged to manage the bike course verbally. Simply being talked to
by a marshal does not indicate that you have been penalized, although you must respond
to a marshal’s direction immediately. Penalty is 4 minutes to be served in the Penalty
Tent in transition.

9. All athletes are required to wear an ANSI or Snell approved hard shell helmet. Your
helmet must be on and secured before you begin riding and remain so until dismounting.

10. Loiza and Vacia Talega, Puerto Rico climate is hot and humid, increasing the chances for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Drink plenty of fluids prior to race morning and during the race. We will offer water and energy drinks at each Aid Station.

11. We recommend using a sunscreen with a high SPF, as you run a high risk of being
sunburned here in the tropics. Please do not put on sunscreen before being Body Marked
race morning. Body Marking and Race Check-in will start at 5:00 am on Sunday at
Vacia Talega in the Transition Area.

CONTENDER triathlon
.
SWIM COURSE - 1.24 miles (2km) 2 loops
.


• The course will be marked by big orange and small yellow buoys on your left and kayakers
on your rigth. Competitors shall exit the water by a specially zone at the finish line.

• All competitors should be in the starting area by 6:30 am.

• Is A Mass Start. You must wear the swim cap supplied by the organizers. You will be
starting in a running start.

• Use Caution at the start of the race. If you are experiencing problems at any point
in the swim, stop. Lift your swim cap and wave it - there will be sailboarders on
course. If you drop out of the swim, please report to the officials' table as soon as
possible.


BIKE COURSE - 56 miles (90km) 2 loops

Important: Although every effort will be taken to limit the number of vehicles on the
course, there still will be a number of official and non-official vehicles on the course. You
are required to stay in the right lane at all times. Failure to do so may result in
disqualification.

• From the transition area at Vacia Talega you are going to road PR187 westbound 1.5 miles to the first turn around point.

• Turn around and ride eastbound on road PR187.

• You will make a hard rigth on road 951. Mile # 5.3 of the bike course. Exercise caution here, as oncoming bike traffic is heading out in the left-hand lane.

• Turn around on mile #8.8 of the bike course on road 951. Ride north.

• Turn rigth on road 187 mile 12.3 of the bike course ride east.

• Turn rigth on road 188 ride south.

• Turn around on mile #14.7 of the bike course on road 188 ride north.

• Turn right on road PR187 ride east to Puente Herrera turn around point.

• Turn around on Puente Herrera Checkpoint. Ride west on road 187 to Espiritu Santo Road.

• Turn right at road PR187 and ride west until you get to Vacia Talega Check point mile #28 of the Bike course and repeat the second and final loop or the Bike Course.

• When finishing the second loop turn rigth on Vacia Talega check point to enter to T2 area.


RUN COURSE- 13.1 miles (21km)
.




• THIS IS A ONE LOOP RUN COURSE. After exiting the transition area you will run
WEST BOUND ON PR ROAD 187 for 1.5 miles to turn around point.

• Turn around at road PR187 and run east

• make a right turn and run south on road 951 until turn around point.

• Turn around and run northbound to road 187.

• Turn left on road 187 westbound to finish line at Vacia Talega.


LOCATION OF AID STATIONS

• Start/Finish - There will be 3 aid stations in the start/finish area - swim finish; run out;
and overall finish.

• Bike Course - Bike aid stations will be located approximately every 10 mile along the
56 mile (90km) course.


• Run Course - Run aid stations will be located approximately every mile along the
13.1mile (21km) course.

The following will be served at the Aid Stations

• Bike - Water, energy drinks.

• Run - Water, energy drinks, energyGel, pretzels and fruits.


A Sag Vehicle will trail the field and transport athletes back to the transition area. The
race organization will not be responsible for providing aid to athletes who choose to
remain on the course once the cut-off time has elapsed.


CUTOFF TIMES (Subject to change)

In order insure the safety of the participants, and to minimize the disturbance to the traffic
patterns of Loiza, the following cutoff times will be enforced. Please remember that a
race of this distance, in a tropical climate, can be dangerous to those who overextend
themselves. Therefore, if you are asked to retire, it is for your benefit.

SWIM CUTOFF
• 1:10 hour from start. 8:10 a.m.

BIKE CUTOFF
• 5.5 hours from swimstart 12:30 p.m.

RUN CUTOFF
• 8.5 hours from swim start 3:30 p.m.

.Want to learn more about triathlons - but not ready to do a race? Why not volunteer?
Are you coming to support your family member but don't want to stand around all day?

By volunteering in the CONTENDER Triathlon you will become an integral part of the organization and the race itself. Be out on the course watching the race in progress, or around the transition area listening to the excitement as it unfolds.

Every volunteer will receive a T-Shirt, among other surprises.

We have a need for volunteers in various aspects of each race. Some of these areas include:

1. Registration / administration volunteers

2. Body marking and timing chip distribution

3. Course marshals – (Bike and Run) Road (Bike) Marshalls - must be over 18 - you keep the bikes going in the right direction

4. Water/aid stations

5. Food preparation/distribution

6. Lifeguards

7. Aid Station Helpers – Manager and Crew

8. Finish line catchers - keeping the finishers upright after their day long battle

9. Medical Assistance - Doctors, Nurses and first aiders.

10. Motorcycle escorts

11. Course Set-up Crew - swim, bike and run

12. Communications - (need experience in radio use)

13. Drivers - must be over 25

14. Competitor Liaison (background in triathlon is useful)
